Hi all -

following up on the 100L barrel question I posted in the Barrel forum.

I thin I need to get an inert gas set up to help my overall control and also enable better flexibility with my topping up wine. I assume I will go with a N2 set up (I really don't want to get into a discussion on N v Ar). What I don't have much feeling for is: what are all the aprts I need for a set up.

I saw the thread started by Hammer (Steve) a cpl years ago. I know I need a tank, 2 stage regulator, some hoses and clamps. Sounds like a corny keg for topping wine. Uhhh. what else do I need?

Please help!

Uses will be:

1. korny keg for topping wine
2. purge headspace in SS VC tank for the limited time I'll be having wine there before barrels
3. purge carboys before ranking
4. something else I'm perhaps not thinking about right now??

thanks everyone for any pointers.

-Chris

Quick connects help to attach things easily.

A diffuser stone will help you be more efficient in gassing headspaces and an air gun attachment with some tygon tubing is useful for gassing bottles before filling them.

Ditto

I basically have the setup you described. Quick disconnects will be sweet when I get around to them along with the diffuser. It is also on my to-do list to setup a sparger before me next bottling this fall.

OK, this seems reasonable.

But I'm still not sure where to find this stuff. I've taken delivery of my small 100L SS VC tank. Need to get it set up and ready. Then the N2 set up and hopefully a small korny keg for topping up the 2012 wines.

Reverend Drake - perhaps I can give you a call and we can discuss? (Although I bet you are about to be swamped with harvest issues).

There are two types of Corny kegs.... Coke and Pepsi. Coke has pin lock fittings and Pepsi has Ball lock. They are not interchangeable. Morewine sells reconditioned Ball lock but they Al'so have the fittings for both styles. The gas in fitting is different from the liquid out fitting.

Morewine has a complete setup for sale...corny keg, tank, regulator, hoses and etc.
Corny Keg System
The biggest thing to remember is to get the right tank/regulator combo. You will want the Nitrogen/Argon setup which is a higher pressure then CO2. If you have any questions on which is the right one to order, just give them a call. Pretty good customer service on their end every time have had to call.

thanks Scott.

Do you recommend a wine transfer gun for topping up from the keg or just use the hose with the dispenses tap?

The small "cobra head" tap works fine. I will eventually get a stainless steel transfer gun just for peace of mind as it is easier to ensure sanitary conditions compared to the plastic. But it is pretty far down the wish list....
