Madison - A fight is brewing in the Legislature over a proposal that seeks to make clear that home brewers don't necessarily have to brew and serve their booze at home.

But opponents to the measure argued at a hearing before a state Assembly committee Wednesday that the bill would give home brewers too much freedom to bypass local ordinances when sharing brews.

State law doesn't allow homebrewed beer and wine to be taken outside of the home, which makes homemade brew tasting events illegal.

The bill would make clear that home brewers could take what they make outside of their home. They would still be prohibited from selling what they make.

Supporters say they just want to continue brewing and sharing their booze as they have for years.

The same issue still exists for many home winemakers across the US, but in terms of brewing....Oregon finally resolved their issue in March 2011 http://www.oregonliv...al_legis_1.html.

Chapter 28 in California affected winemakers and homebrewers alike http://www.mcgeorge....hapter%2028.pdf back in 2008 and WinePressUS's Joel Sommer was a key component of bringing the issues out when he was trying to find a venue for 2008 Winefest http://www.pressdemo...3?template=kart

I particularly like this article from Joel in 2008 http://www.mowinemak...id=52&Itemid=66

It most definitely helps to know your law, especially if you are interested in having a club and competitions in your state.
