I picked up this great book on the suggestion of a co-worker. It's basically an alphabetical list of foods with a list of wines that pair well with them. It's very detailed and thorough (they include fancy things such as 'duck' with a separate listing for 'duck confit') and list wines from all over the world.

I have found this book to be very useful when planning meals for friends and family. For Thanksgiving, we served a pork rib roast paired with a sparkling Alsace rosé and more than one person commented on how beautifully they went together. It really takes the guesswork out of food and wine pairing & provides insight you wouldn't have considered before. Highly recommended.

Books are a great source to guide you through this but don't be afraid to drink what you like with anything.

I'll drink to that :-) One of my favorite pairings is a home made salad with some home made light bodied red I made.
Also, I think the opposite of some - I pick the wine I want to drink and then think of a food that might compliment the wine instead of the other way around. :-)

They have the book reversed also so you can look up foods that pair well with the wine you want to drink!

Now that is a handy thing to have! I'm always in my cellar by 4pm picking the wine first!

Kind of like picking the restaurant based on the dessert list? LOL
I like eating pizza and drinking ice wine....works for me.
I will have to look at that book though, sounds great!

What's so funny about that? I pick my main course based on what I see for dessert!

Lately, it has been taking me forever to decide on what to drink. Probably because it is so hard to find anything down there anymore.

The directions to get IN the cellar are easy. You just have to make it out to NorCal and I'll lead the way!

I think the one most significant thing that I learned about wine since I started making it and exposing my wife and I to their diversity is how much the food/wine pairing affects the taste of each. And that you cannot always predict what might work together. We now enjoy each much more than before. This book could really be helpful.

I guess i am not really into pairing food and wine just yet, i like to drink wine with nothing else, maybe some cheese, but not very often, and i drink water or something else with din din.. I am just not into it, and then when you look up how to pair food with wine i just seem to see "well, you can pair this duck, or this $50 fillet with this and this blah blah." I don't eat that stuff!
