Used to do my fementing in the basement, but found hauling all the must up/down to be a huge PITA. Getting the fermenters to a high enough temp was a challenge too. So this year I converted the main level mud room into a fermentation room. I can fit seven 32 or 44 gallon brutes in it (and me for punchdowns, etc). The door can be closed to keep the heat it.

Wow did it ever work out well. I used a space heater to get the temp up to 85 F, which they reached within 12 hrs of pitching. The fermenters held this temp for 3 days and are just now starting to cool a bit. I'll post a photo...nothing pretty, but works for me.

What is it called a mud room?
Is that where you leave you shoes before going into the house?
My advice may or may not be backed by actually personal expirience and should be treated as such. :)

It's basicaly a small room that you can use to access the house. Yes, it could be used to leave your shoes, etc, but we haven't done that. It used to be my dog's room (he's long gone), and up until last week the kids used it as a little playroom. I'll give it back to them in a couple of weeks.

Yes. Usually it's a room off the back door so you wouldn't call it a Foyer. Mud rooms usually have coats and boots and sometimes cord wood. Most are unheated converted porches.
My wife always professed her desire to marry a man with a body like a Greek god. Somehow I don't think she meant one shaped like Bacchus...

I am actually building a fermentation room right now in my garage. The tricky part is I want it to be my wine cellar as well. I am going to keep it cool so I am going to have to rely on carboy heaters and things like that to keep thing fermenting along. But I figure it will be nice to create wine and store it all in the same place.
