I found one of my vines to have this insect in it. I noticed a hollow spot on a vine that just hasnt grown and snipped it. 3-4 of these things started to crawl out. The one in this image got a bit squashed but hopefully someone will see what it is. It stuffed the empty vine part with frass. It appeared to plug up the hole fairly well. Any gueses as to what it is and should I be worried?

Thanks all
Dan

Some kind of cane boring beetle and yes, you should be worried. I'd spray Sevin on the vines as soon as possible. Be sure to observe any preharvest interval requirements. Most boring insects will dig their way into the wood at joints or notches in the wood. Look for signs at the base of shoots or spurs especially those that are necrotic.

Dan I don't think that is a boring picture at all. It is actually quite interesting. LOL.

Check this link and see if it is the grape cane girdler. Scroll down and you can see it in the adult, egg, larvae and nymph stages by dlicking the figure links.

This may not be what you have, I can't make your picture out well, but it sounds like what you describe and yes they are here in NY.
