For any area folks interested in fresh grapes, Great River Vineyard in Lake City will be having their annual "Pick-Your-Own-Winegrapes Day" on Sunday. Sept. 28nd this year. I received the e-mail below from John Marshall yesterday.

He usually has these varietals available:
  • Frontenac (red wine)
  • Sabrevois (red wine)
  • Louise Swenson (white wine)
  • Frontenac Gris (white wine)
  • Prairie Star (white wine)
  • Table grapes, such as Bluebell and King of the North
John's e-mail:

Dear Grape Picking Friends;

Because of the late blossom this spring and the cool start to summer we have been agonizing over when to have our annual "Pick Your own Wine grapes Day".

All crops are late this season and it has been difficult decision.

We have decided to delay it one week to SUNDAY, Sept. 28th. This should allow all varieties to drop their acid levels, in particular the Frontenac.

This puts harvest critically late in September but we have decided it is best this year to risk it in the interest of better quality fruit (and wine).

WHEN: SUNDAY, Sept. 28th (a week later than normal)
TIME: 8:00 AM to Noon (or so)
PLACE: Great River Vineyard, Lake City, MN, 12 miles south of Red Wing, MN, 3 miles north of Lake City, right along Hwy. 61. - Link to Map
PRICE: $1.00/lb. (same as previous years) Crushing and destemming of red varieties is free if you bring your own buckets with sealable lids.

Thanks and we look forward to seeing you here. Call or email us if you have questions.

Still a beginner, only maid some kit wines and some cranberry wine. Would love to try grapes. I picked grapes at Crofut winery outside Prior Lake last weekend which was fun, you get a story share some wine and he feeds you, plus sends you home with some wine. They are doing this for the next couple of weekends, and any volunteer is welcomed. But this looks more fun becuase we werent able to actually keep the grapes. Does this get pretty packed? How many grapes can you buy?
Sincerely,
Beginner in Burnsville

I have a bunch of Marquette Grapes for sale near Kasota, MN. Brix averages 22 at tis time.

I planned to make 15 gallons and have about 20 vines and they are loaded. I think I may have over done it a bit.

Bring your own bucket. You pick. $.50 cents a gallon.
