I have been looking at dornfelder vines for here up north. The Germans use it and they are almost as cold as we are. Has anyone tried this wine and what did you think of it? It sounds like it ripens early enough for me, and is sweat. Any other info would be great.

If it works in your area, I would think it would do OK in Kentucky. I am also interested in finding out how it would do in cold winter areas.

Yes! You HAVE to do this. It's one of the best wines I've ever tasted, and I had TONS of it while I lived over in Germany. Always good, not too sweet, but not too dry either. Fantastic wine.
I believe Dornfelder is a hybrid of Cab Sav & Merlot grapes, but someone should correct me if I'm wrong.
You might want to post your inquiry in the grape-growing section, because the people there realllllllly know what they are talking about when it comes to what properties a cetain vine carries with it.
As for the taste of the (commercial) wine.... Superb!
I'm trying to get Tim V to make a dornfelder kit, but after 4 years, I think I've given up.

My wife and I both enjoy Dornfelder. I buy it at the Andersons here in Columbus. It’s an easy drinking low alcohol slightly sweet red wine. The bottle I have in front of me indicates 9% alc. by vol.

It was the accepted practice in Babylon 4,000 years ago that for a month after the wedding, the bride's father would supply his son-in-law with all the mead he could drink. It was belived this would insure fertility. Mead is a honey beer and because their calendar was lunar based, this period was called the honey month, which we know today as the honeymoon.
